The Rotary Club of Aigle takes its turn to pass the baton

The 2003 year’s end event of the Rotary Club of Aigle took place in Villeneuve, Aigle, Noveille and Bex. As usual, it took the shape of a public sales of bibers prepared with love by Rot. Jean-Michel Heiz, confectioner in Villars-sur-Ollon.

During these four meetings with the population, an amount of 8,000 Francs was collected, thanks to the generosity of the latter. This sum was remitted on Friday 12th March, 2004 to the Montreux based foundation Pass The Baton which works at creating an electronic register of organs donors in Switzerland, and more globally at promoting organs donation. Its founder, Mrs. Pascale Lilla received the precious cheque from the hands of Paul A. J. Waals, president of the RC of Aigle, and Bertrand Chesaux, president of the commission Action of Public Interest. It will finance the edition of 60,000 information flyers.

Our evening of November 18 th 2003, devoted on the very important problem of organ donation, has been attended by 60 people at the Salle de la Fleur de Lys in Porsel. Our thanks to Mrs. Lilla and Ogay, who have talked about de subject with conviction and sensibility. They have shown that a small card can help, but can also create problems for the immediate family that will have to take the final decision. The two ladies have convinced us, that a computerized file would be a better solution for all, and we hope that de Foundation “Pass the Baton” will be able to realise it in the near future. We wish them lots of success for the future.

On 7th July 2003 in Blonay the Foundation received a check from the Ladies’ Circle N° 1 Club of Vevey further to the day’s journey of last 18th May, families’ day.
The sum of CHF 4’000 was given to the Foundation in order to create the brochure presented on the photograph. This brochure is distributed in all the pharmacies of the French- speaking part of Switzerland and can also be ordered on our site.
We very sincerely thank these ladies for their social action, which will enable us to achieve our goals, let us open the dialogue on the organs’ donation, our choice has to be respected.

Created in 1990 by the University Sports Service and the Lausanne City Sports Service, the Swiss Life International Beach Volley Tournament has become a classical stage of the FIVB calendar. Grouping each year male pairs of world level, as well as young promising Swiss, this tournament is remarked for its ambiance, its will to stay close to the public as well as to the players, and its desire to give the possibility to the youngsters to stand by a sports elite. The 2003 edition, which will take place from 15th to 17th August on the sands of Vidy – Lausanne, further reinforces this festive image through multiple animations and the parallel organisation of a popular tournament of Park Volley. The tournament is supporting the foundation “Pass The Baton” in organising an exhibition match with celebrities from the political, cultural and sports worlds.

Because organs grafting is the fruit of a strange marriage between life and death, numerous people hesitate to sign a donor card. This book, the first of its kind destined to a broad public, is lifting the taboo from all the questions everybody wonders about.

What’s the difference between coma and cerebral death? How to imagine I will be dead without being it entirely ? What does it mean for the grafted person to carry in oneself somebody else’s organ? Why does the receiver not have the right to know the identity of the donor ? How to improve the reception of the near relations in the hospitals? What happens in case of rejection of the grafted organ ? What is the position of the various religions regarding organs donation ?

Thanks to the testimonies of patients, of doctors, of families having donated organs from a near relation, and of living donors, the backstage of transplantation appears as a place vibrating with humanity where joys, hopes and tragedies coast along.

Excerpts:
Vincent Roos, priest :
" Life is like a big cake from which we would gladly take another slice again. "
Philippe Morel, surgeon specialised in grafts :
" My donor card? Here it is. I donate all my organs, except my eyes, at my wifes’s request ".
A Web forum surfer :
" In fact, I’m afraid to die because of this card, as if death were waiting for this moment to reap me. It’s stupid, I know it, but I can’t do anything against it. "

A nurse at the bed-head of a patient whose brain was destroyed :
" I know he’s dead. And yet, I talk to him ".
Didier Houssin, director of the French Institution for Grafts :
" Transplantation doesn’t go by itself, for very profound reasons which belong to the sacred character of corporal space ".

Cathie, about her grand-son, deceased and organs donor :
" A part of David continues to live down here. "
Monique, who received a kidney from her mother :
" My mother was thinking my behaviour was causing harm to " her " kidney. I was obsessed by the idea of keeping it at any price, in order not to be shouted up. "

Akila, transplanted :
" My new liver, I call him " my friend ". He and me have learnt to cohabit. "
Andrea Arz de Falco, ethician :
" I have a donor card, which I never filled in. It often occurs to me to watch it with perplexity. I told my family I agreed to donate my organs, but the final decision was theirs. "

Letter from a receiver to the family of his donor :
" You became dear to me, without my being able to give you a face. From survival, I passed into life and, day by day, I thank the Sky for what I feel as a miracle. "
Two brothers who love each other dearly, one a banker in Geneva and the other an Egyptologist, their mother brilliantly loopy, and the wife of the banker the conformist, his parents, children, the son's friend… Miracle Transplant is first and foremost a painting of the values of a fine Geneva family at the dawn of the 21 st century. Behind the smooth conservative facade of the Paccard-Doutremont family lies great cultural and religious diversity and adherences. And yet they are a family, as the coalition that is Geneva makes for a city that ends up deciding by a large majority to vote for Switzerland to join the United Nations, and in-so-doing reconciling its left and right shores. Miracle Transplant is also the story of a medical transplant, therefore a reflection on life, death and the journey into the hereafter. In this Switzerland where we think we are insured against all manner of risk, there is still room for the unforeseeable glitch, and likewise for a miracle. Modern medicine proposes and the Gods decide… and, when the Osiris court decides, even the Sphinx is overtaken.

And finally, there is The Miraculous Peach , the admirable altarpiece from Konrad Witz who painted Jesus walking on the waters of Lac Léman. Léman, with its pearly mists and pale fog, from where the people of this country are born, and its wonderful blazing colour when the setting sun sets the lake on fire.

After heading the political section of the Journal de Genève and the Gazette de Lausanne , followed by a stint as a columnist for the Tribune de Genève , Françoise Buffat made a remarkable début into literature in 1998. Miracle Transplant is her third novel.
